"We cannot speak other than by our paintings." - Vincent van Gogh (written in his last letter)

And that is exactly how director Dorota Kobiela, a trained painter, chose to depict Vincent van Gogh's life story - through paintings. Kobiela's reason for this was not to set any records, but she didn't believe that van Gogh's story couldn't truly be told without his paintings. A seven year long project was established as the first fully painted feature film in history with over 65,000 frames on over 1,000 canvases by a team of over 100 artists. From shooting the film with actors to painting over them frame by frame, the laborious and time-consuming process took 4 years to develop and perfect the technique and 2 years to actually paint the frames. All of the artists that were chosen practiced the technique that van Gogh is known for in order to bring his paintings to life. Loving Vincent is an exploration of the complicated life and controversial death of one of history's most celebrated artists.
